Part of Startup SEO: A focused 90-day work plan
Do AI-assisted search experiences change what startup SEO should prioritize?
AI-assisted search changes what startup SEO should prioritize: crawlable pages first, then a record of sources and changes, a short list of AI surfaces to monitor, and accessible multimodal assets.
What to take away
- Yes, in one practical waya page has to be checkable as well as readable, because AI-assisted results summarize and cite sources.
- Put crawl access and indexation first. Then keep a record of sources, changes and owners for each page.
- IndexNow returns a receipt for a notification, never for a crawl, an index entry or a ranking.
- Test each change against your own search and sales data before you buy a label or a vendor promise.
What changes, and what does not
AI-assisted search experiences now summarize, cite and combine formats, so a startup's pages have to support a claim with checkable evidence. Pages that repeat what readers already know are the most exposed to being skipped.
Those changes are real. OpenAI launched ChatGPT search on 31 October 2024. Google's AI Overviews reached US searchers in May 2024, and Google announced AI Mode at its I/O developer conference in May 2025. Microsoft Copilot in Bing and Perplexity also answer many queries. None of this guarantees inclusion, clicks or revenue, so treat each claim as a hypothesis to test in your own market; see startup SEO questions answered.
Priorities, in order
- Crawl and indexation.Fix blocked pages, broken canonicals and thin duplicates before anything else. An AI answer can only cite a page the crawler can reach.
- Evidence keeping. For each important page, store its sources, its owner, the date it was last checked and any correction made.
- Notification records. If you use IndexNow, log each request as described below.
- Multimodal assets.Give every chart, demo and screenshot a text alternative and a date.
- Monitoring.Check the AI surfaces that matter to your buyers once a week, and log how your brand is cited.
Drop or pause publishing volume that does not add a checkable fact. Fewer, maintained pages beat a large set that nobody reviews. Each priority needs one named person and a review date, and the first three take a small share of a team's week.
IndexNow is a notification protocol, not a submission queue
IndexNow lets a site notify participating search engines that a URL was added, updated or deleted. The response confirms receipt. It does not confirm crawling, indexing, ranking or display.
Log Every IndexNow Request
- Key used for authentication
- URL set you sent
- Response you got back
- Person who owns endpoint
Keep four things for every request: the key, the list of preferred URLs you sent, the response you got back, and the person who owns the endpoint. Teams that log only the response treat a receipt as indexation and stop checking the page.
You create the IndexNow key yourself and host it as a text file at the root of the site. Bing Webmaster Tools and other participating engines accept submissions for it. Google Search Console reports indexing status on its own schedule, so keep both dashboards and your own log as well.
One filled entry looks like this:
Field / Example entry
- Key file
- /indexnow-key.txt on example.com
- URLs sent
- example.com/blog/pricing-update, example.com/docs/api-limits
- Response
- 200 with an accepted status for each URL
- Owner
- the content lead named in the row
- Date sent
- 2025-11-03
If you are still cleaning up crawl and canonical problems, fix those before you automate notification, because common startup SEO mistakes will follow every URL you push faster.
Automation needs provenance or it compounds errors
Automation is fine for transcription, metadata checks, research sorting and structured drafts. It is not fine as an unreviewed publishing line.
Store the approved inputs, the tool and its version, the reviewer's name, any correction and the source evidence. A page whose sources cannot be found again cannot be defended when a reader or a search surface questions it.
Multimodal assets fail quietly
Charts, demos, screenshots and video answer questions that prose cannot. Each one needs a text alternative, surrounding context that explains it, a stable host page and accurate metadata.
Version each asset and date it. A screenshot of a dashboard from two quarters ago is a claim about the product that is no longer true.
The comparison that matters
Required record
- AI experiences
- Visible answer and source evidence
- Automation
- Input, tool, review, correction
- URL notification
- Key, request, response, owner
- Multimodal
- Alternative, source, version
Failure risk
- AI experiences
- New label, no added value
- Automation
- Unsupported output at scale
- URL notification
- Receipt treated as indexation
- Multimodal
- Inaccessible or stale asset
Measurement past the click
Impressions, citations, branded search, assisted visits, direct return and sales questions all move on different clocks. Define each one before you report it. Log the sales questions that prospects ask, because a rise in branded search that matches those questions is a more credible signal than a citation count. Never claim causation from a correlation you cannot reconcile to customer records.
Which AI surfaces to monitor
Track four surfaces first: Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, ChatGPT search and Microsoft Copilot in Bing. Add Perplexity if your buyers research tools there.
The citation format matters as much as the mention. Log whether you got an inline link, a brand name with no link, a summary with no source named, or a comparison table beside competitors. Record the surface, the query, the date and the anchor text used.
Maintenance is a product function
Assign an owner, an evidence file, a review trigger and a retirement date to every page. A small maintained library beats thousands of generated pages that repeat what readers already know.
Common questions
Will AI search replace traditional results?
No source can promise one universal interface. Test the results and the customer journeys in each market you sell into, and keep the traditional pages working while you do.
Does IndexNow guarantee faster rankings?
No. It notifies participating engines about URL changes, and the protocol is not a submission queue.
Which change should come first?
Fix crawl access and indexation, then build the record for each important page. The record covers purpose, evidence, access, owner, measurement, correction and maintenance. Everything else is easier once that record exists.
